Titles of My Writings: Books; and, Blog/Essays – Ira Seidenstein, PhD

My writings include: two books which comprise a pair; Clown Secret (11 chapters), and, Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare (45 essays}. Those 45 titles are listed at end of this blog. Also online there are currently about 100 blog/essays – the equivalent of another book or two. So far, 96 are listed below with their individual online link.

Additionally there are several written interviews available online via google.

BELOW ARE THE TITLES OF MY BLOGS. AS OF 20 November 2025. The blog/essays were divided into three sections. However most of the blog/essays relate to all three sections.

INTRODUCTION TO THE BLOG

Most of the blog/essays relate directly to acting/theatre/clown/performance. Most of the blogs are relevant for Teachers, Directors, Choreographers, and Performers/Actors/Clowns.

I mention “The Clown Movement” sometimes in my writings. That is a specific idea that I invented to assist people interested in ‘clown’ as a performance genre and as a social activity. Socially or psychologically the social aspects are a natural outcome while exploring one’s own creative, and/or, emotional self-expression in any art form, particulary in performance genres.

“The Clown Movement” begins in a specific year due to a few seemingly unrelated occurances.

Clown and clowning have existed likely in every culture throughout history and likely pre-history – naturally.

None the less, I place the beginning of “The Clown Movement” at 1947. 1947, only because the following and much more occured that year. And those few things directly effected an upsurge Post-Vaudeville, Post-Radio which is “The Clown Movement“.

Here are a few of the main triggering events occurred in 1947:

a) the creation of Clowns International founded in England;

b) the creation of the International Jugglers Association by the Clown Art Jennings, Snr and his colleagues who were fellow Jugglers and Magicians;

c) Marcel Marceau’s first solo performances in Paris and Italy and his international tours continued for nearly 60 years often doing hundreds of performances each year and having performed in over 100 countries;

d) The film Les Enfants des Paradis (The Children of Paradise) although released in Paris in 1945 it had its main international release in the USA in 1947. The film’s screenplay/screenwriter won that category’s Academy Award in 1947 which certainly called attention to the film whose central character was the sad clown Baptiste / Pierrot.

e) notably 1947 was just after the Second World War and there was a burst of technological developments including the practical birth of the medium of Television – especially in the USA. Although the first variety show, which included clowns, began in July, 1946. That show was Hour Glass.

TV exploded in the USA and from the beginning there were – clowns and clown shows and shows with clowns as Hosts and as actors were most prolific. Some of those shows continue to play in online caches. They have continued to play an important role ever since.

‘Clown’ occurs in an infinite variety of ways.

From the beginning there was for example: The Bozo Show, The Milton Berle Show, The Colgate Comedy Hour, The Red Skelton Show. In the beginning to was the first family sitcom The Molly Goldberg Show. Then came; I Love Lucy, Father Knows Best, The Danny Thomas Show and many other to the abundance of talk shows hosted by comedians and shows of ‘contemporary’ clown such as sitcoms and clown’s shows. Decades later came more contemporary shows such as: The Golden Girls, Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory, The Two Ronnies, Morecombe & Wise, Absolutely Fabulous and likley 200 or so other clown/comedy and sitcom shows.

The Clown Movement
The Clown Movement has a continual need to be updated. Your experience with clown is part of a global continuum throughout the ages.

The Clown Movement is comprised of different visions. The Quantum/ISAAC vision is that those visions can be complementary. The Quantum/ISAAC accomplishes that by seeing underneath the differing ideas lay a foundation of Universal Principles. Those principles are taught and used and adapted practically within my method’s Introduction Template – The Four Articualtions for Performance. There are several blog/essays and my two books which deal with and explain my method.

I use ‘principles’ in different ways for example:
The Principle of One implies that whatever one experiences is a direct metaphor about oneself. The Principle of One can be part of your tools of the trade to develop your own vision of clowning.
The method and techniques of Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare and its practical introduction The Four Articulations, provide a real pathway: to create; or to develop; or to change your own vision of clowning or acting/theatre or of creativity generally.
“There are no conclusions, only further discussion.”

This group of essays introduces a process of recalibrating your ways of discussing the field of Clown and Clowning. You will find that each essay stimulates your own creative process and way of thinking about clown specifically; and,creativity and acting generally.

b) BEYOND THE NORM IN CLOWN TRAINING
There are a few patterns in clown training that each tends to be dogmatic within its own borders, and, tends to be antagonistic towards other viewpoints.
I have created a disruptive technology of succinct creative exercises each of which deals directly with the essential problems of teaching clown.
The benefit of my method is that it leads directly to self-empowerment for any participant, no matter what their level of experience or skill.

c) ACTOR/CLOWN ARTISTS
Here you will find a cache of essays about clowns who were so inspired, yet who are rarely discussed within the field of Clown.
You will broaden your perspective about what excellence in clowning can be, and thus you will have a chance to be inspired towards your own aesthetic and viewpoint.
